Colossus
the
world's first ten looping roller coaster made its debut in 2002.
It was the first major roller coaster ever to be installed at Thorpe
Park and really put them on the map. Colossus attracted millions
of visitors, however, like most things, it has aged extremely.
Colossus
is still a very daunting ride to look at, standing 100ft (30m) above
the ground, and roaring around its 850m track at speeds in excess
of 45mph. Although this doesn't seem too fast as you probably drove
to the park at more than 45mph, but you weren't outside, you weren't
going upside down and you weren't dropping down steep drops. The
dramatic music enhances the atmosphere around the area and makes
the ride very daunting, especially for first time riders.
Despite
Colossus being quite young it still manages to throw you around
as if it was there before the war. We recommend that you sit in
the front row and avoid the back, AT ALL COSTS, the further back
you sit, the more of a headache you will have. Even
with all of this pain everyone is still drawn to it, with queue
times reaching two and a half hours in the summer months, it is
a ride that, if it has to be ridden, has to be ridden first/early
on.
The
ride, you start by climbing the 100ft tall lifthill, once at the
top you can see the M3 over the trees, a small dip to the left is
quickly followed by a steep drop. You then enter a vertical loop
before diving under a path. An airtime hill follows before you enter
the vicious cobra roll, diving back down under the shop, you suddenly
enter two corkscrews, have your picture taken and make a banked
turn towards the rest of the ride, 4 barrel rolls follow this, these
leave you hanging onto your restraint like there's no tomorrow.
A banked turn to the left is then followed by a much faster and
closer to the ground barrel roll before you enter the breaks. Thats
it, your ride on Colossus is over!
Riders
must be a minimum of 1.4 meters tall to ride.
